Adaptive Riding

What is Adaptive (Therapeutic) Riding?

Adaptive Riding enhances the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of individuals with diverse special needs. Led by PATH Intl. Certified Instructors, HTR’s adaptive riding program serves riders ages four through adulthood, with lessons tailored to each participant’s abilities and personal goals.

Through learning horsemanship and riding skills, riders experience increased independence, confidence, and peer interaction in a fun, supportive environment. The horse’s rhythmic movement closely mirrors the human gait, providing therapeutic benefits that improve balance, strength, muscle tone, coordination, and flexibility.

Adaptive riding is available to individuals ages four and older who can sit independently and have physician approval to ride. After completing a rider application, participants complete a brief evaluation and are placed in an age- and ability-appropriate weekly class.

Classes are 45 minutes and run in 16-week sessions. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, lesson fees are $45 per class—below the actual cost of instruction. Scholarships are available, and no rider is turned away due to financial need. For questions about eligibility, applications, or scholarships, please email info@HTRkc.org.
