What is Horsemanship?

Horsemanship is the art and practice of safely and confidently working with horses from the ground. Our program focuses on developing an understanding of horse behavior, communication, and care—while building a trusting partnership between horse and handler.

What do Horsemanship Lessons Look Like?

Horsemanship lessons are 30 minutes long and take place once a week for a 16-week session. Each participant is paired with an HTR horse that they will work with consistently throughout the program. Lessons are taught by PATH Intl.–certified instructors and may be offered as private or semi-private sessions. These lessons do not include riding—all activities are done from the ground. Sessions may take place in the barn, indoor arenas, or outdoors on our trails, pastures, or sensory bridges.

What is Learned?

Each week’s lesson is customized by the instructor to match the participant’s interests, goals, needs, and skill level. Topics may include leading and handling, grooming and bathing, daily horse care, nutrition, herd dynamics, equine behavior and psychology, and more. Lessons are designed to build confidence, deepen understanding, and strengthen the partnership between horse and handler.

What is the Cost?

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are able to offer lessons at a reduced rate. The cost per horsemanship lesson is $25. Scholarships are available, and no participant will be turned away due to inability to pay
